Seychellois dance and music
Dance and music in Seychelles is a refreshing amalgamation of European, African, Arabic, and Chinese traditions and instruments.
There are a number of different traditional dances that are enjoyed in Seychelles. The Moutia is popular with its percussion and string instruments. It contains foreign influences from France and Britain.
Sega is one of the most popular in the influential form of music in Seychelles and is a dominant form even now. The Sega dance which accompanies this music is a popular dance style traditionally performed with hand drums and rattles. while the feet remain planted on the floor in a rhythmic shuffle.
Moutya or Montea is another popular style of music, which still holds a firm grip in Seychelles. The dance form is accompanied by a Moutya musical performance.
Kanmtole music bears a resemblance to the French Royal Court’s contredanse as well as Scottish square dancing. The music is accompanied by an accordion, violin, and banjos. Dating from the early 19th century, the kanmtole is a lively blend of all these dance styles. Other musical styles in Seychelles include hip-hop, country, modern jazz, rock, ballads, and choirs performing traditional popular, sacred, ancient and evangelical music.
Maloya is another style of music in Seychelles, similar to Sega. The instruments used are similar. The music is slower than Sega.
Zouk and Seggae are two types of music developed in late 1990.
The unique combination of music and dance in Seychelles is performed by the locals in the hotels, resorts, and at the city center in Seychelles.
