Seychelles
Seychelles is an island nation in the Indian Ocean. It consists of 115 islands. Mahé is the capital. Seychelles was uninhabited prior to being inhabited by the European settlers in the 16th century. First, it was occupied by the French and later by the British.
When the British frigate Orpheus arrived in Mahé on 16 May 1794, during the War of the First Coalition, Jean Baptiste Quéau de Quincy, the French administrator of Seychelles successfully negotiated the status of capitulation to Britain which gave the French settlers a privileged position of neutrality.
Britain eventually assumed full control and Seychelles became a crown colony separate from Mauritius in 1903. Britain granted independence in 1976 and then it became a republic.
Elections were held since 1966.
